It's been reported by the AAP that Vic Darchinyan will not be ranked any higher than number 5 in the IBF flyweight rankings. Last weekend in Connecticut, Darchinyan lost his IBF flyweight title when he was stopped in five rounds by heavy underdog Nonito Donaire. He may land a fight to secure a mandatory position in the rankings.
Darchinyan's manager Matt Watt said that he will speak with his fighter when he returns to Australia, and explore the option of facing Donaire in a rematch. Watt says that Darchinyan may also move up to super flyweight and pursue a title shot at that weight, or simply wait to see what Donaire will do before he makes a decision on his next move.
"I think the first step is what does Vic actually want to do," Watt said. "He may step up to super flyweight, he may stay at flyweight, we just need to have a decent, meaningful conversation when he's back on home ground, it's too hard over the phone. Does he want to stay at flyweight or step up and then where's Nonito in the scheme of things? He came down to flyweight, is he going to stay there? I think those questions are more fundamental than is there going to be a rematch. I'm in conversation with Gary Shaw, Vic's promoter, but until Vic gets back and I sit down with him, I can't be definitive about what we want to do."
