Gennady Golovkin is the World Boxing Association’s “super” titleholder at 160 pounds. Daniel Jacobs, as of this past Saturday, is the WBA’s “regular” titleholder at 160. And the sanctioning body somehow had another bout on the same night as Jacobs’ win in which Dmitry Chudinov defended the WBA “interim” title at middleweight.
Jacobs could conceivably challenge Golovkin someday, though he’s also aiming for his promotional and managerial stablemate, fellow titleholder and Brooklynite Peter Quillin.
Jacobs, 27, was asked whether he could pressure his promoter to make a bout with Golovkin happen, given that Jacobs works with Golden Boy Promotions and Al Haymon and is featured on Showtime, while Golovkin is with K2 Promotions and is being spotlighted on HBO.
“That’s a battle that’s out of my control,” Jacobs responded. “I would love to fight every champion out there in the world, but if I’m with a promotion and he’s with another promotion, and they can’t come to terms to make a fight like that happen, then that’s out of my control. I would love to fight any and everybody in the middleweight division.”
He was also asked about Golovkin’s win last year over another New York middleweight, Curtis Stevens.
“Me and Curtis are two totally different fighters. He’s more of an aggressive slugger like Mike Tyson. I’m more of a boxer-puncher, so my style’s a bit different, and I also switch at times, too. So I can be a bit tricky in there at times. I think I’ll apply a little bit different skill than Curtis.”
