When “Premier Boxing Champions” airs on ESPN on Aug. 1, two of the fighters being featured will be people who audiences have seen at ringside and heard during broadcasts.
One is welterweight Paulie Malignaggi, who will face Danny Garcia in the main event. But while Malignaggi’s worn both boxing gloves and television headsets for some time, Daniel Jacobs is newer when it comes to the latter.
Jacobs will face Sergio Mora on the Garcia-Malignaggi undercard at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. He first served as a guest analyst in April 2014, when Malignaggi fought Shawn Porter on Showtime. More recently, he’s been on PBC broadcasts either as an analyst or as a ringside reporter speaking about what fighters’ corners were saying between rounds.
“I’m enjoying doing it. It’s giving me a different perspective on the sport that I love, and it could set me up for the rest of my life as something I could do post-boxing,” Jacobs said on a June 23 media conference call. “Obviously I’m not straying away from the main task at hand. Boxing, obviously, is what I love to do, and it’s the forefront.
“I’m 110 percent focused on what we’re doing actually inside the ring. But on my spare time and in-between fights, something I also like to do is just stay busy,” he said. “For the most part we’re building a brand. That’s what we’re doing. I’m having fun doing it, but I’m taking it serious because boxing is a very short road.”
Jacobs learned just how short that road could be back in 2011, when he spent a year and a half out of the sport while he battled cancer that threatened his career and potentially his life as well.
Since returning he’s won seven straight, including a 12th-round stoppage of Caleb Truax this past April. Jacobs, 28, is now 29-1 with 26 KOs. The lone loss came via technical knockout to Dmitry Pirog back in 2010.
