On the undercard to Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, lightweights kicked off the show as local kid Darryl Hayes made his professional debut with a clean 4 round decision over Gerard Carillo also of Houston Texas. Hayes was able to subdue the aggressor Carrilo with a controlled attack. Scores were 40-36 twice and 39-37.
In Junior Middleweight action, Michael Anderson of New York City needed all of a minute and 16 seconds to dispatch Oscar Rosales 148.5. Early in the round Anderson dropped Rosales and had him hurt. In an early upset Ramon Flores from Wilmington CA stops the previously unbeaten Hector Vazquez from Dallas Tx. Trading shots from the outset, Flores catches Vazquez with his guard down sending him crashing to the canvas. Vazquez gets up at the count of 8 but the referee decides Vazquez cannot continue. Junior middleweight, Jermell Charlo out of Houston Tx wins a unanimous four round decision over Juan "El Cuco" Serrano. Serrano was game but far too wild for the Willie Savannah managed Charlo. Charlo controlled the pace from the outset and save for a few bombs landing was never in peril. In round 4 Charlo had Serrano reeling all over the ring and could have had a knockdown had the referee been in position to see Serrano's glove touching the canvas. Charlo improves to 6-0 (3 Kos) while Serrano drops to 2-5-1 (2 Kos)
Golden Boy prospect and Houston native Hylon Williams 8-0 (3 KOs) faced fellow undefeated Texan Edgar Portillo 3-1 (2 KOs). The fast handed Williams has his way with the rugged and game Portillo launching a variety of punches both from the outside and in. Williams while not the heaviest of hands showed enough pop to keep Portillo at bay most of the fight in route to a six-round stoppage.
The Golden Child, super middleweight Daniel Jacobs, needed just one round to dispatch the 12-15-3 Jose Cruz. While Jacobs continues to impress you hav to wonder how many more soft touches he faces before getting a true test. Daniels improves to 14-0 (13 KOs)
