At Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan, Daisuke Naito (34-2-3, 22 KOs) retained his WBC flyweight title with an eleven-round technical knockout of countryman Shingo Yamaguchi (23-6-2, 9 KOs). It was fourth successful title defense for Naito. A crisp right hand at 1:11 of the round put Yamaguchi down moments before the fight was stopped by the referee. The fight marked Yamaguchi's third attempt to win a title.
The talk in Japan is that Naito will now face former champion Koki Kameda (17-0, 11KOs), known to many as the bad boy of Japanese boxing. There will be some bad blood involved if they meet.
Kameda was involved in the controversy that took place last October when he advised his brother Daiki, during a fight Daisuke Naito, to elbow Naito in the eye. Daiki was suspended for one year and their father was suspended indefinitely from the sport. Koki was let off with a warning.
