By Stephen "Breadman" Edwards
The Daily Bread Mailbag returns with Stephen "Breadman" Edwards answering questions on Dominic Breazeale vs. Amir Mansour, Danny Garcia vs. Robert Guerrero, the development of Vasyl Lomachenko, the punching power of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, and more.
How do you think the fight go this weekend:
Breazeale vs Mansour
Danny Garcia vs Guerrero
I can't decide if Danny stops Guerrero or it goes the distance. I'm I'm leaning towards Mansour because the odds are slightly better and I'm not at all impressed by breazeale. What do ya think
Mike from CT
Bread’s Response: Breazeale gets hit too easy. His defensive reaction time is very poor. A fighter that tall fighting the competition he’s been fighting shouldn’t get hit as easy as Breazeale does. Mansour is a big puncher. I love his grit and determination. His glaring flaw is he’s a short fighter and he does not bring his feet with him when he attacks. He often lounges off balance too often.
This is a close fight but if you twist my arm I say Mansour by tko in an exciting fight.
I know everyone takes shots at Danny Garcia. But Danny can fight. He has a clutch gene where he does just enough to win. I think Danny looks really strong at 147. Guerrero in my opinion gets hit too clean to beat a big puncher like Danny. I know he took Berto’s punches but Danny has more staying power than Berto. Danny also won’t let Guerrero hold him up against the ropes and just beat on him. I say Danny by mercy stoppage but wouldn’t be surprised if it goes 12.
Howdy,
1.What do you think of established boxing sites and writers putting Lomachenko who loss to Salido and beat 1 contender(now champ)?Isnt this the type of thing Floyd was referring too?
2.What must guys like Crawford,Wilder, and other African Americans champs to start moving these tickets.I dont think opposition is that much of a prob look at Canelo-Kirkland and frankie Gomez). How can entice not just African Americans but other Americans in general?
3.I know we have to see him against a top opponent but do you think if Ward applies his type of Mexican like Salido like mauling style you described in your theory against Kovalev that its his best bet of not only beating but krushing the krusher?
Mytical Matchups
Prime Ali vs Prime Tefofilo
Prime Ikebuchi vs Prime Tyson
Prime Felix Savon vs Prime Lewis/Holyfield
Bread’s Response: I think Lomanchenko is the #1 fighter at 126. I think he’s improved since the loss to Salido but I would like to see him avenge the loss. But to be fair Salido was heavy for the fight and Lomachenko gives the appearance he’s better than Salido, he just didn’t have it that night.
I honestly don’t have a problem with Lomachenko being considered the best fighter at featherweight. If not him then who….
Not sure what comment Floyd made. Next time you write in quote it for me. I don’t remember Floyd saying anything about Lomachenko.
It’s not what they can do. It’s what their promoters and handlers can do. I never get people putting the blame on the fighters when they don’t sell tickets. Crawford, Wilder and Ward sell great at home. They need a promoter to get them the right opponent on the big stage to expand their horizons. Wilder did just did great in New York. These things take time.
Great questions I definitely believe Ward can sort of swarm, maneuver and inside fight Kovalev. Kovalev likes space. The question is can he discourage Ward from getting there. What a fight that will be….
I can’t compare a great amateur to a great pro. Savon and Stevenson are both supreme talents and were every bit as good as Lewis and Ali as amateurs but that doesn’t mean they could beat them in 12 or 15 round fights. It’s too hard to tell….
I don’t know enough about Ibeabuchi to say he could beat Tyson. We saw him do well vs Chris Byrd and David Tua and his career was over. We know more about Tyson. Prime Mike Tyson was a handful for anyone ever. Give me more definitive match ups.
What's up Bread?
I just wanted to get your thoughts on Deontay Wilder's highlight reel KO of Artur Spzilka and Charles Martin's anti-climactic win over Glazkov.
Peace,
William in West Palm
Bread’s Response: Wilder’s right hand is outright scary. But I think his power bailed him out in this fight. I predicted he would clip Spzilka and he did. What I didn’t expect was for Spzilka to be winning. I know he wasn’t up on the official cards but I thought Spzilka was winning the fight. Wilder may have taken him lightly and maybe he knew he would catch him.
Nevertheless often times a brutal ko erases the scenario in which led up to the point. I think this may be a case of that. I already knew Wilder had power but I wasn’t overwhelmed with the performance up and to the point of the ko.
I can’t really comment on the Martin vs Glazkov fight. It was too short to tell anything.
Could David Haye at a historically average 6 ft 3 and 227 lbs be the best one-punch currently hitter at the weight? He sh*t the bed vs. Wlad but he seems to have legit electrocuting power.
thanks!
Gabe
Bread’s Response: Haye is definitely a huge hitter. But I’m not sure if he’s the best puncher in the heavyweight division at this moment. Wladimir Klitschko in my opinion is an all time puncher. He won’t get the credit he deserves because his temperament doesn’t exude that of a killer. But his left hook and right hand are just incredible. Deontay Wilder is also a lights out puncher with his right hand.
You bring up Haye’s size. He is a historically average size heavyweight. But Wilder and Haye weigh the same. George Foreman, Ernie Shavers and Joe Louis all weighed less in their primes and those are the 3 best punchers I’ve seen at the weight. Leverage and god given gifts are just as important as weight.
Hey bread whats up, Hope all is well and good luck to j-rock in his next fight. 1st question I have is what are your thoughts on Deontay Wilder and his progress as a fighter? It seems to me he isn't improving and is consantly being in tough fights with guys 1 would expect he should be blowing out inside 5 rds. I notice something with a lot of fighters such as danny Garcia, broner, wilder, quillin, rios, gamboa etc that once they reach the main event/ championship level they all stopped getting better. As a coach why do you think this is? Is it due to improved level of comp, the adjustment of now making big money and the change of lifestyle that comes with that or lack of activity going from 4-5 fights a yr to 2-3 fights a yr? 2nd did you see the movie Southpaw and what were your thoughts on Forrest whitaker as a trainer? 3rd what are your thoughts on the pernall whitaker situation with his mom and family. He seems to be struggling financially and is cleaning house? Lastly im a big fan of the young up and coming prospect's so if they fought today who would win these matchups Robert Easter vs Felix Verdajo, Omar Douglas vs Gervonta Davis, Caleb Plant vs David Benavidez, Erickson Lubin vs Oscar Molina, Jarrett hurdd vs Dominique Dalton, and Jarrell Miller vs trevor bryan?
Bread’s Response: I actually think Wilder is improving. Wilder needed the rounds he’s been stretched too. I see a guy who has confidence in his late power. A guy who is believing in his chin more. A guy who is believes in his stamina. The next logical step for Wilder is to put him a 60/40 or 50/50. He doesn’t need 4 showcase fights in a row. Povetkin is perfect at this point.
The other guys you mentioned you have a point with. But they were all more advanced fighters when they won their titles. Each case is different but I will go down the line. I think Danny leveled off after Matthysse because of the scare vs Mauricio Herrera. That fight put him in sort of slump/ A damned if you do damned if you don’t state. I think if you put Danny in with a tough fight with a guy who comes to him he can regain his Matthysse form. It hurts when you’re struggling and only fighting twice a year….
Broner has immature ways and I think they moved him up in weight too fast. To skip 140 and go straight to 147 from 135 is a historic jump. Broner has proven to be more talented than he is good. Seems like a contradictory statement but it’s not if you think about it. I’m interested to see if he can regain his form he had vs Antonio Demarco.
Something happened to Peter Quillin in the Gabe Rosado fight. He was a fire breathing killer before he fought Rosado. Starting with Rosado not one of his performances were A level. It’s one of the strangest things I have seen. I don’t know if it was physical or mental but something definitely changed in Quillin. I also think he struggles too much to make 160 and struggling to make weight shortens the career.
Brandon Rios stopped being able to make 135lbs. Rios lost his physicality over 135. Being able to shrink down in weight and rehydrate and force himself on smaller men was his gift. At the higher weights he walks into beatings. I thoink Rios will have a tough time regaining his form. I didn’t like what I saw vs Tim Bradley. He struggled to make 147 and he will get seriously hurt at 154.
Gamboa is a quick twitch uperior athlete who is inactive and over 30. That’s his problem. He doesn’t have a promoter who can get him the right fights. Unfortunately I think he’s done.
Robert Easter vs Felix Verdejo. Easter. Omar Douglas vs Gervanta Davis. Let me see more of Davis. Caleb Plant vs David Benavides. Benavides is too big and forceful for Plant. Erickson Lubin vs Oscar Molina. Lubin. Jarred Hurd vs Dominique Dolton. Hurd. Jarrell Miller vs Trevor Bryan. I haven’t seen Bryant.
Yes I saw Southpaw. Forest Whitaker did a great job. Loved his role.
