The Daily Bread Mailbag returns with Stephen 'Breadman' Edwards to discuss Gennady Golovkin vs. Kell Brook, Robert Easter vs. Richard Commey, Leo Santa Cruz, Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward, and more.
Hey Breadman,
Congrats on the title shot, I can't wait to see you all add to the legacy of Philadelphia world champion fighters. I have two questions.
What is your prediction on the Richard Comey vs Robert Easter fight? Also, how can Kell Brook pull off the upset?
I think Kell brook will fair well against GGG but will ultimately fall short. I think Kell brooks natural style and ingle training negates GGG left hook body shot. I know GGG has every weapon a fighter can have but like JCC his left hook downstairs sets up his shots up top. I think if anything troubles Kell it will be GGG jab and of course the power. This is not Khan verse Canelo, Kell is more fundamentally sound and more elusive and GGG is not as accurate as Canelo.
Bread’s Response: I like Easter to defeat Comey by tough decision. Easter has a little too much sauce to his game.
Yes Kell Brook can win but I doubt he will. The thing about GGG is look at his fights closely. He’s not super hard to hit but he never loses rounds. In the last 4 years he’s probably lost 3 o4 rounds tops. Nobody can seem to get enough work done to take a round from him. It’s mostly because they can’t take his power. Not only does he punch hard but contrary to what you believe he’s accurate. Look at the combination he kod Willie Monroe with. Everything was on the money.
Kell Brook is a tremendous fighter. Look at his pad work. His coordination is smooth and he can duplicate the routine in a fight. Often times an athlete’s build will determine his gifts. Kell Brook is perfectly proportioned. He’s 5’9 in height and his reach is 69 inches which is Exactly the same. Look at his body and you see perfect proportion. This tells me he doesn’t over compensate anywhere. If he had James Toney’s chin I would pick him to win. That’s how high I am on his chances. But James Toney has a top 20 chin ever. I say GGG wins but he has to go deeper than he ever has before.
Hey,
Any news on what Danny Garcia is doing next?
Come November 19th I believe we will know, for sure who the P4P best is, Kovalev V Ward! Do you agree that the winner is p4p best? What do you see as the keys to victory? If you are a betting man, who are you putting your money on?
Irish Fight Fan.
Bread’s Response: Yes I would have to assume that the winner of Kovalev vs Ward is the p4p #1 guy. But let’s see how the winner wins first before we crown him.
I think the key to victory is Andre Ward neutralizing Krusher’s attack. Kovalev is faster and more athletic than he is given credit for. I’m actually curious as to who is the faster fighter. It’s hard for me to tell from footage. If Ward can keep him out of sync and stay away from the right hand he should win a decision. But that’s not as easy as it sounds. Kovalev lands his right hand in every fight. He also finds his rhythm during every fight and goes on a round run where he starts to dominate.
What's your opinion on leo santa cruz after his fight with frampton? I thought frampton exposed leo santa cruz as a hype job his best win was a damaged goods Abner Mares. How many years do you think GGG has left and what his legacy will be?
Bread’s Response: I don’t think Santa Cruz is hype job at all. Frampton vs Santa Cruz was a great fight. I never thought Santa Cruz was as good as Barrera, Marquez or Morales. But he’s an excellent fighter for this era and I would say top 25 in the world.
I think GGG will be in his prime for the next 3 years at least. He barely takes punishment. He may not be at his peak during that time but he can still retain his prime form the way Floyd Mayweather has recently.
It’s tough to determine what his legacy will be. His career is still being written.
If GGG is so great why won't he fight Lara? is it because of Lara's movement and power or HBO not wanting to take the risk in losing their new built cash cow?
Bread’s Response: I think GGG should fight Lara. Lara keeps asking for the fight. Make an offer and call his bluff. I would sign up for that fight.
Breadman,
I'm a strong supporter of Ward. I have been since he went gold for our country. I also predicated he would take the super 6 and not lose a fight while competing.
Throughout these years, I have never seen or felt Andre was in danger of losing.
Against the Krusher, he is up against it! BIG TIME! I'm looking for the Krusher to play the counter puncher in this fight. Keep the distance and scoring with his long jab and never allowing Ward's right foot to ever be on the outside of his (Krusher) right foot. Constantly keeping Ward Squared and in range of the straight Right hand that the Krusher unleashes.
It's not gonna be a sexy fight but the Krusher will use his natural born gifts and ability to force Andre to be the aggressor.
Kovalev is not gonna just let Ward stay in his chest and smother his punches.
I have the Russian 55/45 as of right now.
Andre is gonna have to have his greatest night to pull this one off. I believe he has it in him that's why I have it so close
Dominic
Bread’s Response: If Krusher does what you said then you believe he’s faster or at least has better timing than Ward. I can’t tell who is the fastest it’s really close but I do suspect Ward’s mind is quicker. That’s important. Ward does not have the punch variety that Kovalev has but I think it adds to his quickness because he usually solves a problem with a jab. Instead of having to dig through a tool box and find something.
I think it’s a 50/50 fight but Andre Ward seems to always find a way to win. Until I see other wise I assume he wins this one by a point or two.
