The Daily Bread Mailbag returns with Stephen 'Breadman' Edwards giving his thoughts on the the possibility of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Danny Garcia, a cruiserweight battle between Glowacki and Usyk, the Berto vs. Ortiz rematch, Golovkin vs. Canelo and more.
Hey Bread - just read that Glowacki must fight This Usyk kid. I recall you saying good things about him. From what you have written and what the fight is being billed as they may be overlooking the 9-0 kid .
Bread’s Response: Usyk is the best cruiserweight in the world. No one at 200lbs can beat him. Trust me on this one!
Whats your take on this fight? I don't think Ortiz lasts 3...
Bread’s Respponse: I’m assuming you mean Berto vs Ortiz. I definitely think Ortiz last longer than 3 rounds. The big question about this fight Ortiz’s mental state. I have always believed Ortiz has problems with the mental aspect of boxing. But against Andre Berto those aspects don’t always come into play because that’s his most successful moment as a pro. Ortiz should be confident and Berto is the one who will have to overcome demons. Berto has always had confidence issues in my opinion. Berto has his work cut out for him in this fight. I think he should try to get rid of Ortiz early…..
Hey breadman , hope all is well.
I have a few things I wanna say before I ask some things.
First off I think the stance canelo is taking in the whole GGG scenario doesnt look good. Rumors that he may fight rosado in septmeber at 156 and putting GGG on hold again .the last three ring champs at 160 have avoided GGG .
My question to you is how far off is julian williams in fighting canelo
At this point and if canelo avoided him would you ever consider moving up to 160 and having
J rock fight GGG ??
Bread’s Response: Jrock is not moving up at this point. He’s the #1 contender in the IBF at 154lbs. But if and when he’s ready to move up he’s willing to fight GGG. Golovkin is a great fighter but he’s just a man. The fighters in his division are showing him too much respect. It’s a testament to how soft this era is. In my opinion the only one who truly wanted to fight him is the HOF bound Andre Ward who is not a middleweight. Other than that….
I think very highly of Canelo. He lined up lots of tough fighters after being accused of fighting soft competition. I’m especially impressed that Canelo went after Erislandy Lara, who is a stylistic nightmare for him and he won the fight. He didn’t have to go anywhere near him but he did.
I’m not calling a Canelo a ducker yet because he hasn’t even had one title defense. I don’t think it’s fair to assume a new champion will take on his biggest threat in a unification match in his very first title defense. I know we are in a soft era but you have to be realistic. Fighters from 40 years ago weren’t even doing that on the regular either.
What I will say from an objective point of view is GGG is correct in his stance. The man has been avoided since 2012. He has seen 3 men carry the lineal and Ring Magazine titles in his division and he has not been able to secure a fight with any of them. If GGG was stumbling to split decisions, getting cut and dropped every other fight, I guarantee you, he would have received a shot by now. The reason why he hasn’t got the big fight yet is he’s too good. Sometimes the answer is not complex.
GGG is claiming he wants the middleweight title. Canelo and Cotto are claiming they aren’t real middleweights. But they happen to be the middleweight champion. It doesn’t take a Board of Inquiry to review this situation and decide who is right and who is wrong. If GGG does not want to fight at 155lbs then that’s his choice and he’s correct in his stance in my opinion…In fairness to Canelo I will give him until next Cinco De Mayo. If he hasn’t fought GGG by then it’s a duck.
What's going on Bread,
Simple question, how we do stop this sucka ducking shit going on in boxing right now. I got respect for every fighter that step in that ring but it's getting out of control. At the end of the day, boxing is still a sport and every sport I ever played, I was in it to be the best. These dudes want all the glory, none of the scars. Thurman, Porter, etc are blatantly ducking Spence and getting away with it. They fighting each other but I get the feeling they had to be pushed into it. These dude still calling Spence a level below them as if they beat anybody(Broner at 47, a washed Guerrero). Same thing at 160, Canelo is one of my favorite fighters but if you ain't going fight at the weight then get off the belt homie
Jacobs scared to say GGG name, Saunders waited until GGG was locked in a fight to be tough after declining a career high payday. How is this stuff being tolerated? It's refreshing to see a dude like J Rock who with whatever and willing to fight whoever. I can tell when I listen to him speak it ain't one of them half ass "I'll fight anybody" and he mean it. These dudes trying to take the express lane to Floyd status. Thurman ain't been in a 50-50 fight yet but talk as if he's done something in the sport when if he stopped fighting today, no one would care. Lately he's been calling out Danny because he thinks that'll be a easy name to put on his resume but he should be careful what he ask for.

Bread’s Response: I think the blatant ducks will stop when fighters stop being rewarded for taking the road of least resistance….These guys are going to volunteer for surefire concussion when they can get 7 figures to fight guys they know they can beat…
Do you think Danny Garcia will get the Mayweather fight? He doesn’t seem to want it but he’s just the kind of guy Floyd feast on. Marketable but vulnerable. Who wins Thurman vs Porter? Does Khan have a chance? Break it down for me?
Bread’s Response: I don’t know if Danny will get the Mayweather fight. But I hope he does. Danny is a great kid and I would love to see him get the payday and a chance to make history. We shall see….I think Danny will get Mayweather or the Berto vs Ortiz winner.
I’m back and forth on who wins Thurman vs Porter. Right now I say Porter by the skin of his teeth.
Sure Khan has a chance. He’s a world class talent. But I think Khan has a really tough challenge in this fight. He’s going to have to fight the perfect vs a puncher. He hasn’t done that yet in his career.
The biggest problem in this fight is Amir’s infatuation with his speed. If you listen to a fighter talk long enough he will tell you what you need to take away from him. This may sound like an oxymoron but although Khan is the faster fighter. I don’t believe he is the quicker fighter. He probably could beat Canelo in a 100 meter race. But in a game of mind quickness where you had to hit a flashing target I think Canelo would win.
Canelo may be a master counter puncher. He can counter to the head and body, with either hand. Canelo is not thought of as athletic because of his build. But besides speed I think he has all of the athletic advantages over Khan. Coordination, reflexes, quickness etc etc.
The good thing for Khan is quickness can be developed with proper repetition. If Khan has had a great camp and I suspect he has, maybe he will process the problems quicker than he usually does. Another advantage Canelo has is boxing IQ. Khan has to listen to Virgil Hunter. It’s imperative that he listens in this fight.
If you guys don’t believe quickness beats speed. Watch Juan Manuel Marquez vs Derrick Gainer and Julio Cesar Chavez vs Hector Camacho. Gainer and Camacho were the faster fighters. Chavez and Marquez were the quicker fighters. And these aren’t cases of overpowering. They were cases of Chavez and Marquez outboxing them going forward. When you can make a decision quicker to do something in a boxing ring, in often times can trump speed. Let’s see what happens.
