On September 26 at the Max Schmeling Hall in Berlin Sauerland Event will stage a big show celebrating its 35th anniversary (in Germany, that is).

Headlining is WBA interim-welterweight champ Jack Culcay (20-1) against an opponent to be announced. In the co-feature super middleweight Tyron Zeuge (17-0) is rumored to take on Eduard Gutknecht (28-3-1). Since Bulgarian heavyweight Kubrat Pulev (20-1) is to participate in the press conference announcing the show it´s an educated guess that he will fight on the undercard in his first fight since losing to Wladimir Klitschko.

On September 26, 1980, Wilfried Sauerland—a wealthy businessman—decided to venture into professional boxing in Germany - at the time very far from the lucrative days that would come. Headlining was middleweight Frank Wissenbach (31-2-1) vs Eddie Smith (23-9-1). As it was Wissenbach was counted out in the third but Smith was dq.d as it was ruled the knockout blow was below the belt.  Also on the bill was Chisanda Mutti, who would go on to fight likes of Lee Roy Murphy (the famous double knockdown fight) and Rickey Parker for the IBF title.

Sauerland continued to promote shows all through the 80´s but it wasn´t until the Iron Curtain fell and East German light heavyweight Henry Maske turned pro in 1990 that professional boxing in Germany took off.
