Sources in Argentina have advised BoxingScene.com that Jesus Cuellar, who holds the WBA's 'regular' featherweight championship, is going to file a petition with the World Boxing Association for a shorter timeframe in which Leo Santa Cruz (31-0-1, 17KOs) is obligated to face him.

Last Saturday night in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz became the new WBA "super champion" at 126-pounds with a twelve round unanimous decision over Abner Mares.

Cuellar, who held the WBA interim title and then eventually became the 'regular' champion, was a little disappointed with Santa Cruz moving up to featherweight and being allowed to fight for the 'super' title that Nicholas Walters lost on the scale earlier this year.

Because Cuellar feels that Santa Cruz jumped ahead of the line for a 'super' title shot, he wants the WBA to shorten the time of their recent order - which gives Santa Cruz up to 18 months to face him.

He wants the WBA to cut that time in half to 9 months, which allows both of them to have an interim fight before facing each other. Under the current order, Santa Cruz would not have to face him until the first quarter of 2017. Cuellar, who is big for his weight, may not even be at 126-pounds by that point.

Both fighters are advised by Al Haymon and fight under the Premier Boxing Champions banner.
