The manager of Carlos Cuadras, Salvador Briman, says the negotiations are very advanced for a possible match against Nicaragua's Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez on September 10 in Los Angeles, California.
Gonzalez, who holds the WBC flyweight crown, would move up in weight to challenge Cuadras for the WBC super flyweight title. If Gonzalez wins, he would make history as the only fighter from Nicaragua to capture four titles in four weight divisions.
Cuadras (35-0-1, 27 KOs) is preparing in Los Angeles for Gonzalez (45-0, 38 KOs). Briman says the negotiations are 85-90 percent complete, which makes him think the fight between the two fighters could be finalized sooner than expected.
"We are very close to achieve this for September 10 in California, and many important details have been solved. We are missing other details that I can not disclose, but we are making progress and we are confident that this fight between Cuadras and 'Chocolatito' will happen. I would say the talks are advanced 85-90 percent," said Briman to ESPN Deportes.
Chocolatito is considered to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world, and Cuadras holds the highest ranking in the super flyweight division. If the bout with Gonzalez falls through, one possibility is a mandatory defense against Thai boxer Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.
The promoter for both Cuadras and Gonzalez is Japan's Akihiko Honda of Teiken Promotion.
Gonzalez was in action back in April and won a twelve round decision over tough Puerto Rican boxer McWilliams Arroyo. Cuadras was also in the ring back in April, when he retained his title with an eight round stoppage over tough Filipino contender Richie Mepranum.
