Carlos Cuadras racked up the fourth defense of his super flyweight title, stopping Dixon Flores in five rounds Saturday evening in Guamuchil, Mexico.
There appeared on paper to be little hope of a competitive fight heading into the night. Flores danced as hard as he could, making the trek from Nicaragua - his first outside of his home country for his first-ever title shot, even if the manner in which he obtained it remains unclear.
Cuadras was simply too much for the visiting 21-year old challenger, picking up steam with each passing round.
Flores (11-3-2, 3KOs) was hurt in rounds three and four, but stood tall and gave it his best effort to convince Cuadras and the fans on hand that he was fine and with no intention of going anywhere. The power-punching champion put that theory to the test, picking up the intensity considerably, to which Flores had no response.
A pair of knockdowns in round five—coupled by Flores' reaction following his second trip to the canvas—prompted Frank Garza to halt the contest.
Cuadras rolls to 33-0-1 (26KOs) with the win, racking up the fourth consecutive defense of the super flyweight title he lifted in a technical decision over previous claimant Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. The bout ended due to a cut suffered by Cuadras from an accidental headbutt, deemed unfit to continue and going to the cards after seven-plus rounds of action.
His first title defense also ended prematurely, this time with Jose Salgado suffering a cut. The wound came prior to the conclusion of round four, not long enough to classify as an official fight and thus ending in a technical draw, despite the fact that Cuadras was pitching a shutout on the scorecards at the time of the cuts stoppage.
Wins over Marvin Mabait (KO5 last November in Washington D.C., his stateside debut), former flyweight champion Luis Concepcion (UD12 this past April in Mexico) and now Flores comprise of the balance of his title reign.
Up next is a potential rematch with Sor Rungvisai, who made his way back to the contender's circle with a win over Salgado in their final eliminator earlier this year.
The super flyweight title fight aired live on Televisa.
