Mijares planning to move up
By James Blears
Boxing promoter Nacho Huizer is negotiating to bring WBC Bantamweight Champion Hozumi Hasegawa to Mexico, to fight former champion Cristian Mijares.
Nacho is today going to Panama for talks with Hasegawa’s representatives. His aim is to persuade the champ to sign for a March fight against Cristian. The preferred sites are Monterrey or Torreon in Northern Mexico, which is home turf for Cristian.
Nacho was ready and willing to admit that Vic Darchinyan caught him and Cristian by surprise at the recent Home Depot Center clash in Carson, California. He conceded: “We underestimated Darchinyan. I thought it was going to be an easy fight for Cristian. What can I say- everybody saw the fight. He easily beat Cristian, almost knocking him out in the first round. So we have to give credit to him. No wonder he’s now going for the big fight against Arce. We were supposed to get that fight, but look what happened. However, it’s nothing to be ashamed about. We’ve got to come back, to recover the name and prestige that Cristian has."
“Cristian wants a direct re-match with Darchinyan, but I’m the one who takes the decisions, and I don’t think it’s right for the immediate re-match. Cristian has to go for the Batamweight Title, win it, and in the near future….why not?! This is a business, and to make money you’ve got to face the best. And right now the best is Darchinyan. So my champion can be the best, but he has to come back and beat Darchinyan.”
