Durango, Mexico - Before a hometown crowd, Cristian Mijares retained the WBC super flyweight title by stopping Japan's Teppei Kikui in the tenth round. Mijares (32-3-2, 13 KOs) dominated the fight from start to finish by battering his overmatched challenger from the opening bel.. The first bout since his April destruction of heavy favorite Jorge Arce.
I have no idea who this fight was a pay-per-view main event, and less of an idea on why Mijares would give Kikui (21-6), who was coming off a February decision loss to Kohei Kono in Tokyo, a shot at his title.
In the co-feature, Gamaliel Diaz (22-6-2, 12 KOs) won an unpopular ten-round decision over previously undefeated Elio Rojas (19-1, 12 KOs). Both fighters were penalized in the fight by referee Frank Garze. Rojas lost two points for hitting behind the head in ninth round and Diaz was also lost a point in round nine for excessive holding.
Also on the show, Lorenzo "Explosivo" Trejo (30-15, 17 KOs), knocked down in the first round, came back off the mat to stop Eric Ramirez (20-5-1, 15 KOs) in six rounds. Ramirez was dropped in the fifth and finally knocked out in round six.
