After Antonio Margarito (34-5, 24KOs) was decisioned by Paul Williams on July 14, he not only lost his WBO welterweight title, but also lost a pay-per-view showdown with WBA champion Miguel Cotto.
According to Bob Arum, who promotes Cotto and Margarito, if both fighters win on November 10, they could possibly meet in the first quarter of 2008.
Margarito returns on the undercard of Miguel Cotto's title defense against Shane Mosley on Nov. 10 in New York's Madison Square Garden. The likely opponent could be Golden Johnson (25-7-3, 18KOs). Johnson has received the offer from Top Rank, but has not yet agreed to take the fight.
Arum told boxing scribe Dan Rafael that if Cotto wins and Mayweather and De La Hoya are not willing to fight him, Margarito would be next.
"If Cotto wins and Margarito wins, and Oscar [De La Hoya] and Floyd [Mayweather] are not available to fight Cotto, the next option is Margarito," Arum said.
