Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says nothing has changed for the career route of Miguel Cotto. If Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. beats Alfonso Gomez on December 4 in California, Arum is still planning to put him in the ring with Cotto in March 2011. New York and Las Vegas are under consideration to host the fight. Cotto would make the first defense of his WBA junior middleweight title.
As BoxingScene.com reported on Tuesday, a rematch between Cotto and Margarito is impossible for early 2011 because of the time required for Margarito to recover from the injuries he suffered in last Saturday's loss to Manny Pacquiao. Arum says the rematch is still a possible option for the future. Margarito had surgery to repair a broken right orbital bone. He needs to stay away from the gym for at least 60 days.
"The plan is for Miguel and Chavez Jr. to fight in the spring. I don't want to waste more time with Miguel not fighting. I feel Antonio looked good enough to be an option but I do not think he will be available to fight in March because he was operated on and it takes time to recover. But he showed courage and the public liked the fight, "Arum told Carlos Gonzalez.
