Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30KOs) has been ordered to pay $2 million dollars to his uncle and former trainer Evangelista Cotto.
The two of them have always had their fair share of ups and downs in their relationship, but the tempers really exploded in 2009, when Evangelista attacked Miguel during a training dispute. The altercation was violent and Evangelista was later taken to the hospital with injuries.
Evangelista, after he was officially fired, filed a lawsuit in Caguas and claimed that he was owed money from Miguel's fights.
The ruling was unexpected. Cotto and his team were confident their case was rock solid and they felt the judge would easily rule in their favor.
Gabriel Peñagarícano, Cotto's legal adviser, has 30 days to appeal the issued ruling and he plans to do so in the next two weeks.
Cotto is returning on December 1 in New York's Madison Square Garden. He faces WBA "regular" junior middleweight champion Austin Trout.
