Panamanian boxer Rafael "El Torito" Concepcion has continued to train for a potential fight with WBO/WBC bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel or another possible opponent. Concepcion thought he had a deal to fight Montiel on July 17. The fight was postponed when the WBO ordered a purse bid for Montiel to defend his title against mandatory Eric Morel of Puerto Rico.
Montiel's promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions was quoted in an interview saying the fight with Concepcion could happen in September. Montiel defends against Morel on the July 17 date in Mexico. Concepcion won't retreat from the prior agreement with Montiel. He wants Mexican champion to honor their deal.
"For Montiel or any other opponent I have to be in top form," Concepcion told Prensa. "We know that we've had a contract for Montiel since May, and Eric Morel has nothing to do with our contract. I will continue with my training and continue my hunt for the title and I'll fight any time."
