Tony Bellew’s trainer, Dave Coldwell, was in confident mood when Boxing Scene caught up with him in Glasgow last Friday night, ahead of the world cruiserweight contender’s next outing on Jul 12 against Julio Cesar Dos Santos.
Coldwell, who had just watched his British light welterweight champion, Curtis Woodhouse, lose his title to Willie Limond had a rather clever answer for ‘Scene when we asked if Bellew was in “beast mode” yet, to coin a modern-day term.
“An intelligent beast. I’m bringing in intellectual bombing,” beamed Coldwell.
“That’s what I’m calling it. Getting him back to being confident in using his power shots, how to set them up, what shots to throw and what direction.”
And the Sheffield based promoter/manager/trainer had nothing but praise for The Fury family and their team after Bellew visited their base for some sparring with American, Eddie Chambers.
“He had a great spar with Eddie Chambers. He’s class. What a lovely fella,” Coldwell remarked.
“I’ve never met Tyson Fury. All I know is Tyson Fury from Twitter. We went up there and I have to say, Peter Fury is one of the most amazing gentleman I’ve ever met in boxing, he’s such a nice fella. I’ve always had respect for him. Whether Tyson’s off on one or not, Peter’s always really respectful. So Tyson came in and you know what? What a nice kid! Gotta say, I’m a fan and I have to say he looks in shape (ahead of his Jul 26 rematch with Dereck Chisora).”
