The war of words between Welsh boxers Nathan Cleverly (23-0, 11KOs) and Enzo Maccarinelli (33-5, 26KOs) is getting personal and vicious. The two boxers, former friends and stablemates in Enzo Calzaghe’s gym – are now in a realm of tension. The war of words began when Maccarinelli, a former WBO cruiserweight champion, began a new career campaign by dropping down to light heavyweight, and it didn't take long before the boxer started targeting Cleverly's WBO championship.

Maccarinelli recently attacked Cleverly's father/trainer Vince in the press, which promoted a big response from Nathan. Cleverly is targeting the champions in his division and doesn't consider Maccarinelli an option at the moment.

"Enzo can wait and earn his chance. When he earns his shot – if ever he gets in the position to earn his shot – then I’ll happily take him out. I’ve said that all the way along. It’s got personal and I’ll make him pay for that – big time.” Cleverly replied to Wales Online.

“I think it’s down to jealousy. I’m world champion and he’s obviously gone off the radar. Simple as. He said some silly things about my dad, but ultimately it’s down to jealousy and the fact he’s gone off the radar and I’m world champion.

“I take no note of him. I’ve got my eyes on bigger fights with guys who I’ve got something to gain – people like Shumenov, Hopkins or Cloud who have got belts. I’m going in a different direction.”
