Vince Cleverly, who took his son, Nathan, to the European light-heavyweight title on Saturday night, has put the recent resurgence in Nathan’s power down to their split with Enzo Calzaghe’s training camp. Nathan is now going through his paces at the Church Place Amateur Boxing Club in Wales; Vince believes that this switch in the training pattern has boosted Nathan’s fistic education, leaving him on the cusp of world titles at 175lb.
“It's absolutely fantastic, we're living our dream since we've left the Calzaghe camp, its going better and better,” said Vince when speaking to BBC Sport South Wales. “Nathan has got more mature, but training has also been altered from the previous camp. I brought in another pad man to help me out with the pad work and to practice his knockout shots.
“At last he's been proved to have a fantastic right hand that he hadn't developed in his previous camp. He always had good body shots. We've managed to get the best out of him. I think the proof [of the pudding] is in the eating, he's done the business, he's had seven fights [since leaving Calzaghe], six knockouts. I don't think we can be doing much wrong at the present time. My job is to keep Nathan winning.”
Another win or two could see Cleverly go for the likes of Tavoris Cloud, who won the IBF title by defeating Sheffield’s Clinton Woods, or closer to home, the German-based Juergen Braehmer, who won the title by decisioning Dmitry Sukhotsky in December. Ironically, Mario Veit, who was twice destroyed by a certain Joe Calzaghe, inflicted Braehmer’s first pro defeat.
