Former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly has been chasing after Juergen Braehmer for five long years and now the fight is finally upon him, taking place this coming Saturday night in Germany.
Back in 2011, Cleverly (29-3, 15KOs) was scheduled to face Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35KOs) for the WBO title. Braehmer withdrew from the contest and the sanctioning body stripped him.
Cleverly then captured the vacant world title and lost that belt three years ago to current unified beltholder Sergey Kovalev.
Cleverly had an unsuccessful run in the cruiserweight division and decided to move back down to 175-pounds.
And once again Braehmer is the world champion and Cleverly is the challenger. Braehmer holds the WBA's 'regular' world title at the weight.
Cleverly told Sky Sports Boxing: "Five years in the making, this fight. I'm so glad we're finally here now. It's been a difficult fight to make. Getting Braehmer into a boxing ring with me has been difficult but here we are and I'm looking to take it with both hands. I feel more mature now. I'm 29 and more mature mentally and physically. I feel in a better place and I'm ready for chapter two in my career.
"It's too big an opportunity, this. There were a few options on the table but this is the one I want. The world title on the line, Braehmer with history, five years in the making. I just felt this fight needed to happen. I feel ready for it. I'm hungry and let's bring that belt back and become a two-time world champion."
