A potential featherweight unification between unbeatens Chris John and Yuriorkis Gamboa is a step closer to becoming a reality. John's adviser Sampson Lewkowicz, and Gamboa's promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, met on Wednesday to discuss the fight and they reached a mutual understanding.
According to their conversation, the 28-year-old Gamboa (19-0, 15 knockouts), and, the 31-year-old John (44-0-2, 22 KOs), would likely take an interim bout before meeting in a more lucrative fight in the fall. Originally, Arum and Lewkowicz had targeted an HBO televised early March showdown between the two gifted fighters.
"I met with Sampson, and we decided that we would try to get the fight done for the fall of 2011," said Arum, who turned 79 on Wednesday. "But the thing is that we would allow each of the fighters to take a interim fight before that. That's what we're looking at."
