Chris Eubank Jnr has been fined £10,000 (approximately $13,600) for misuse of social media by the British Boxing Board of Control. It is in relation to the footage he posted that suggested he was using a sauna to make weight ahead of his April showdown with Conor Benn. The 35-year-old must pay the fine before the BBBoC will licence him for his next bout which, though yet to be formally confirmed by all parties, has been reported as being a rematch with Benn on September 20.
On the eve of their memorable first encounter, Eubank Jnr had to make 160lbs at the official weigh in. There was also a contract between the two fighters that stipulated that neither could weigh more than 10lbs above the middleweight limit on the morning of the fight. Eubank, 35-3 (25 KOs), missed weight when he came in at 160.05lbs though he did fulfil his rehydration obligations. Eubank posted videos of himself dripping in sweat, seemingly from the use of a sauna, on Friday April 25. Using a sauna to make weight is prohibited by the BBBoC.
The Board inquiry ruled that Eubank had not used a sauna but he will still be punished for his misuse of social media
"Mr. Eubank Jnr. was found to be in breach of Regulation 25 for misuse of social media. The Southern Area Council fined Mr. Eubank Jnr. the sum of £10,000," read a statement from the Southern Area.
"Mr. Eubank Jnr. was confirmed as arriving late for the official weigh-in ceremony for the contest in question and received a severe reprimand placed on his file from the Southern Area Council."
Eubank, who won the 12-round contest on points, was hospitalised after the bout due to severe dehydration.
In the build-up to the contest, Eubank was fined £100,000 for smashing an egg in Benn's face during a press conference. Eubank's intention was to draw attention to Benn previously failing two drug tests due to the presence of clomifene and subsequent reports that suggested excessive egg consumption was the reason.
