World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman is possibly going to order an immediate rematch between Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.
Last Saturday night at New York's Madison Square Garden, Gonzalez lost the WBC super flyweight championship when he was on the losing end of a twelve round majority decision to Sor Rungvisai, who was the mandatory challenger.
Gonzalez saw his undefeated record drop to 46-1, 38 KOs. The scores were 114-112, 114-112 and 113-113.
Gonzalez, who was knocked down in the first round, was a bloody mess because of several cuts that were caused by numerous head clashes.
In certain situations where the rules are regulated by the WBC, Sulaiman's organization deducts a point from the fighter who initiated the head clash - accidental or not - if the opposing fighter receives a cut from the collision.
At this point Sulaiman is waiting for Gonzalez's team to submit a petition which requests an immediate rematch. Then the WBC will make a ruling, and there is also the issue of Carlos Cuadras who is the mandatory challenger to that title.
"First we have to celebrate the fight, it was undoubtedly one of the best fights of the year. On the other hand, there was a lot of controversy. In the WBC we have as a rule that after a head clash - if one of the fighters is cut - then the fighter who was not cut will lose a point. And the scorecards were not read after rounds four and eight, and that would have given Chocolatito an idea on how the judges were scoring the fight," explained Sulaiman to ESPN Deportes.
"Carlos Cuadras was named at the convention as the mandatory challenger, but after what happened in the ring we have to wait for Chocolatito protest, see the medical reports and once we have all of that in hand we will determine what will happen. For Thailand, the victory by Srisaket was something very significant."
