WBC flyweight champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez (44-0, 38KOs) was advised by his promoter, Japan's Akihiko Honda of Teiken Boxing, that no mandatory obligation has been ordered as of yet by the World Boxing Council.
Gonzalez is talking about a return on a date in February and is waiting for some type of confirmation.
2015 has been very successful for Gonzalez, who fought three times and two of the bouts were featured by HBO.
He stayed busy in February by knocking out Valentin Leon in three rounds in Nicaragua. He then stopped for champion Edgar Sosa in two rounds in May, in a fight that was televised by HBO, and then came back in October to get his most impressive victory to date with a ninth round stoppage of Brian Viloria.
Gonzalez advised his promoter that he's open to fighting any opponent within his division and excludes nobody provided the money makes sense.
"Mr. Honda was happy because there is no mandatory fight at the moment. We will fight in February. No matter who is number one contender, right now we are not obligated to take that fight. I told [Mr. Honda] that I will fight with anyone they put in front of me, provided that pay me well. Right now we only know that in February will be my return to the ring, but it is uncertain whether it will be in the United States or in Japan," said Gonzalez.
