Junior middleweight prospect Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (39-0, 29KOs) wants to put forth an impressive performance against undefeated Luciano Cuello (23-0, 10KOs) on March 28 in Tijuana. The fight is the main event of Top Rank's Tijuana Thunder pay-per-view, that also features Fernando Montiel, Humberto Soto and Jose Luis Castillo.
Chavez wants to make up for the poor performance that he gave in Mexico against Matt Vanda in their first meeting. That fight, held last year in Mexico, saw Chavez struggle to a close decision win. The hometown crowd was upset with his performance and showered him with boos and even threw objects into the ring. He redeemed himself by winning a lopsided decision over Vanda a few months later in Las Vegas.
"I am very enthusiastic about heading to fight in Tijuana, which I consider my second home. I am preparing my at a rapid pace because I want to show that I am ready to hunt for a world title," Chavez told ESTO.
Back in December, Chavez had an operation to fix some damage to his right hand. He says the hand will be 100% when he steps in the ring.
"This past December, the operation to my right hand was a success. I do not feel any pain and I feel real confident when I am hitting things in the gym. I've been boxing without any problems and I'm landing better punches," Chavez said. "I am going to come in at 100% for my fight with Cuello in Tijuana. I still haven't seen videos of him, but I know that he has a difficult style, throws a lot of punches and there I'm training hard for what my opponent is going to bring."
