Julio César Chávez Sr. is confident his son will have a rematch against Sergio Maravilla Martinez to wipe out his defeat from September 15, 2012. On that night, the Argentine fighter dominated for eleven rounds, but during the twelfth and final round - Chavez Jr. (46-1-1) hurt and dropped Martinez, who managed to get up and won the fight by unanimous decison. After the fight, it was revealed that Chavez tested positive for marijuana and he got hit with a nine month suspension.
"Julio showed in one round that he was able to defeat Martinez. If he had fought like that from the beginning, Martinez wouldn’t have had a chance. Julio had the worst preparation of his career for that fight. He listened to nobody, he trained at night, he didn’t attend the gym and he paid the price of that. But he will have his rematch with Martinez. If he had won the fight, it would have been the worse for him because he would have continued training like he did for that particular fight and that is risky for his health,” Julio said.
“I suffered his defeated as his father but I know that it helped him. He’s young and will put things right. My son will return and will become world champion again. He will fight on September 28 and then he probably face Rubio for the WBC interm middleweight title and the winner will face Martinez when he recovers from his injury."
Chavez Jr. will face American Brian Vera on September 28 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
