According to Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., a potential fight between his son, WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31KOs), and mandatory challenger Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs), is currently being explored and a fall date of September 15th has been placed on hold for the fight. The fight will take place in Las Vegas, says Chavez Sr.
Chavez Sr. told BoxingScene.com that his son's promoters, Zanfer Promotions and Top Rank, advised him of the ongoing discussions and reportedly a tentative agreement, in terms of staging the fight in September, was reached.
Additional sources confirmed to BoxingScene that Chavez-Martinez is certainly being discussed. Staging the match in September would allow Chavez to move forward with a planned fight against British boxer Martin Murray on June 16th in El Paso, Texas.
The WBC ordered Chavez-Martinez last December at their 49th annual convention in Las Vegas. Provided Martinez defeats Matthew Macklin later tonight in New York City, the WBC will expect the two sides to reach an agreement within 30 days before a purse bid is scheduled.
"Everything is ready. They told me there is already an agreement to fight in September. We hope that Martinez wins [tonight] and that Julio wins his fight against Martin Murray on June 16 in El Paso, Texas - [so Julio can] fulfil the wishes of so many people - and once and for all to shut a lot of mouths," said Chávez Sr.
