On June 9, unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (31-0-1, 24 KOs) will make his return to the ring on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Zab Judah pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden in New York City. He takes on Grover Wiley (30-9-1, 14KOs), the last man to beat his father, Chavez Sr.
In a recent interview with BoxingScene's Ernest Gabion, Chavez said the fight is personal for him, because Wiley ended his father's career.
"Yeah, it's something special. The fight has been made a couple of times, but I have never had the chance to fight him. Now I have the chance on June 9th. It's kind of a personal thing for me," Chavez Jr. said. "I am very anxious to fight him."
If Chavez wins over Wiley, who lost four of his last five fights, he will face two-time champion Arturo "Thunder" Gatti in November. Gatti has to keep up his end of the bargain by defeating Contender star Alfonso Gomez in July. Chavez views the bout with Gatti as a step towards a world title.
"It's something that I feel excited about. I think it's a really big fight and I think it's a step to fight for a world title. I think it's going to be a really tough fight," Chavez Jr. said. "Gatti is a really tough, strong guy and he takes the punches well, but I think it's a winnable fight. If I beat Gatti, I'll show people that I'm ready for a world title."
The fight Chavez Jr. would love to land is against Oscar De La Hoya, who stopped his father twice. Chavez was one of the few fighters to have fought De La Hoya twice and there was plenty of bad blood between the two fighters. Junior is ready to get revenge for his father.
He said a fight with De La Hoya would be "more personal" for him than the June 9 bout with Wiley. De La Hoya has said that a bout with Chavez's son does not interest him. The younger Chavez thinks he that he can eventually get De La Hoya in the ring because a fight between the two of them could be worth a lot of money.
"De La Hoya has said in public that he doesn't want to face me, but this is a business and not a sport that much," Chavez Jr. said.
