Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs) is confident trainer Robert Garcia will get him to a world title.
The Mexican star made several changes in 2015. He was trained by Joe Goossen when ge suffered his first knockout loss on April 18 against top light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara of Poland. He then broke away from Goossen following the loss. He then hired Garcia and returned in July to get a decision win over Marco "Dorado" Reyes, but suffered a serious injury to his left hand that required surgery and put him on the bench for the remainder of the year.
During his layoff, he explored the possibility to getting back together with Hall of Fame Freddie Roach, who trained the boxer for a few years and led him to the middleweight title. Roach confirmed in multiple interviews that he was approached about the possibility of getting back together.
Things were not clear as to who would train him, as Chavez continued to provide contradictory comments regarding the future of his corner.
To clear the air, Chavez made it known that Garcia would certainly be the man to lead the corner in the next fight.
"I want to work with Robert Garcia again. I do not rule out [the possibility of training] again with Freddie, but I also think it would be ungrateful to give Robert the opportunity of only five weeks to work with me for Reyes. Now we have two and a half months to train and learn different things, so for now I'm going to continue with Robert," Chavez Jr. said.
Chavez promises to rededicate himself for a potential title fight with WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack.
"I am 29-years-old and I have a lot of fights and a lot of years left. I became champion, I am now more mature. I know what I want and I realize what I need to do," Chavez said.
