Initially, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was supposed be out of the gym for three weeks while healing a left hand injury that he suffered in his last fight. But now it seems he will need at least a month of rehabilitation, which pushes his return to a date in November or December instead of September or October as he previously said.
Chavez is still looking at potentially fighting former champion Lucian Bute, who returns to the ring in two weeks. The Mexican star is also considering Gabriel Rosado and a rematch with Andrzej Fonfara.
Chavez would eventually like to get a shot at the winner of the upcoming title fight between George Groves and the champion of the World Boxing Council, Badou Jack.
"With the injury, I think I can come back in November, the latest in December, against Bute, Fonfara in a rematch, or Rosado. I do not rule out going against the winner of Jack and Groves, but I think I would be ready for a fight championship with one more fight," said Chavez to ESPN Deportes. "I hope to meet soon with Al Haymon to discuss all of these possibilities, the idea is to fight at 168 pounds or a maximum of 169 pounds.
Chavez Jr. has fought twice this year, getting stopped by Fonfara in April and then coming back with a decision win over Marcos Reyes in July.
