Charlie Edwards has refuted claims that he has ducked a shot at the British title.
The Surrey-born flyweight, who is trained by Danny Vaughan and based out in Spain under the management of MGM Marbella, pulled out of a fight against Andrew Selby (4-0, 3 KOs) for the vacant Lonsdale belt, despite winning an eliminator.
But WBC International Silver title holder Edwards, 23, has told Boxing Scene that the fight is a bigger proposition in the future and that it could be worth 10-times the money when it eventually does happen.
“I have no problem fighting Selby [and] I have sparred thousands of rounds with him and only lost to him by 17 points to 14 when I was 19 or 20,” he said.
Edwards (7-0, 3 KOs) produced a punch-perfect performance to claim the aforementioned fringe World Boxing Council bauble with a one-sided points win over Luke Wilton (16-5-1, 7 KOs), on the undercard of Carl Frampton’s WBA and IBF super bantamweight world title unification victory over Scott Quigg, to put himself in pole position for a showdown with the younger brother of IBF featherweight titlist Lee.
“It's all about getting the most money out of this game,” he continued telling ‘Scene.
“Flyweights don't earn as much as others, [so] why would I fight him for £15,000 when in a few years [the fight] could be [worth] £100,000-plus? [It’s] just a no brainier really.
He also holds the English title in the eight-stone class, but Edwards is looking to move on to bigger and better things, teasing his fans on social media, telling them that he “[has] got a big fight on the cards, which will be announced soon.”
But for now he is content in the knowledge that his management team [MGM Marbella] and promotional group Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sport will do all they can to get him to the top of a division in which Román ‘Chocolatito’ González stands head and shoulders above the rest.
“People can call me what they want,” he said. “As a fighter, I would fight him tomorrow, but my management and promotional teams choose my path and [it is] their job to make me as much money as I can earn.
“So I will listen to them because they know best.”
