The WBA cancelled a purse bid for a heavyweight eliminator between Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagave after being told a deal had been reached. Meehan received a contract for the fight on Friday. No date has been mentioned but he toldThe Sun-Herald the fight will likely take place in Germany. The winner will be in line for a shot at the April 3 bout between champion David Haye and mandatory John Ruiz.
''Words can't explain what that would mean,'' Meehan said. ''It's like the best thing you could imagine in life finally comes true, a fairytale ending. 'I've had seven fights fall through. Seven. You get frustrated but at the end of the day you have to ask yourself, 'How easy is it become a millionaire? How easy is it to become the best?' It's not meant to be easy.
''This is what I'm best at in this world, boxing. It's time to get the rewards. Finally they are going to come, but I've got to beat these guys first. 'They're not going to stop me. Bugger them.''
Meehan has a lot of respect for Chagaev, who lost badly to Wladimir Klitschko last year. The Klitschko loss was the first defeat of his career.
''You have to give the guy credit, he's hardly lost any amateur fights as well,'' Meehan said. ''But when I watch and study him, he's very basic. His best punch is his left hand and he doesn't hide that fact, he tries to throw it as often as he can. 'I won't underestimate him. I've started training really hard.''
