Prizefighter's latest tournament, showcasing the super bantamweight division, kicked off at York Hall in London.
The Quarter Finals
The first bout of the evening saw unbeaten puncher Willie Casey (6-0, 5KOs) stop Mark Moran (11-2-1, 3KOs) in the third round to advance forward. After getting the better of Moran in the first two rounds, Casey poured on the punches in the third to drop and then stop his opponent.
Josh Wale (10-2, 5KOs) scored a minor upset over veteran Esham Pickering (34-10, 13KOs) with a three round split decision to advance forward. A close fight with both guys having their moments. The scores were 30-29 for Wale, 29-28 for Pickering and 29-28 for Wale.
Jamie Arthur (17-3, 4KOs) won a close split decision over Robbie Turley (7-3, 1KOs) to advance forward. More of a close boxing match than anything else. Both fighters picking their spots with Turley closing a little better in the third. The scores were 30-27 for Arthur, 29-28 for Turley and 30-27 for Arthur.
Ricky Owen (12-0, 4KOs) won a closer than expected outing over Gavin Reid (6-6-1, 3KOs) with a split decision to advance. The fight was exciting and the best of the night so far. They were swinging big shots in the first, resulting in cuts on both fighters. Reid managed to rock Owen bad in the second round to score an official knockdown. He couldn't follow-up for the finish as Owen fired back with combinations to fight his way out of danger. The third was close but Owen managed to land the better and harder punches. The scores were 29-28 Owen, 29-28 for Reid, and 29-28 for Owen.
Semi-Finals
The first semi final bout saw Willie Casey (7-0, 5KOs) win a split decision over Josh Wale (10-3, 5KOs) to advance to the final fight. Casey came out strong in the first with his power shots. He appeared to gas out in spots as Wale used his boxing ability and switched angles to keep Casey thinking. The second round saw good combination exchanges by both to make it close and the third and final round was more of the same with both fighters trading hard punches. The scores were 29-28 for Casey, 29-28 for Wale and 29-28 for Casey.
The second semi final saw Ricky Owen (13-0, 4KOs) win a unanimous decision over Jamie Arthur (17-4, 4KOs) to advance to the final fight. Owen landed the hard and crisper punches. He punished Arthur with hard shots in the second, but Arthur came back with hard punches of his own in the third. All three judges saw it for Arthur with scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.
Prior to the final bout, Owen was pulled by a doctor due a cut he suffered earlier on above his right eye. Owen told the doctor he was having trouble with his vision. He was replaced by undefeated Paul McElhinney (4-0, 0KOs), who goes to the final bout of the evening with a record indicating that he doesn't have a lot of punching power.
Final Fight
Willie Casey (8-0, 5KOs) won a unanimous decision over previously undefeated Paul McElhinney (4-1, 0KOs) to win the Prizefighter tournament. After an close first round, Casey began to push the tempo with his hard punching combinations that busted up McElhinney in the second. McElhinney tried to adapt in the third with body shots to slow Casey down but it didn't work. They traded some good shots at the end, but Casey landed better to close it out. The scores were 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.
