The four fighters from Smithy’s Gym that fought in Brisbane, on two different promotions, all had one thing in common. They all had their hand raised in victory.
At Norths Leagues club in Brisbane rising professional Jezze “El Rey” Carrasco trained by Brendon Smith scored his first victory, after a draw in March in his debut, in impressive style. Catching his opponent John Duffy, he forced the referee to stop the contest after just 1 minute and 12 seconds in the first round.
In an amateur heavyweight boxing fight at the same venue Josh Webb, trained by Brandon Wood out of Smithy’s Gym, gained his revenge over former foe Panapa Pereira. Pereira who had previously beat Webb in the cage was no match for Webb in the stand up game who caused the referee to stop the contest in the 4th round.
At an amateur tournament at The Valley PCYC under the watchful eye of assistant trainer Bert Hornery, amateur Steven Spark won an interstate battle, his first since claiming the 57kg junior Australian title earlier this year. In what was a close fight, Spark defeated Blake travers from NSW by 11 points to 10.
Gavan Hornery also claimed victory over the more experienced Caboolture fighter Ryan Wassmuth by 16 points to 9.
“It was a sensational effort all round, all fighters shined under the bright lights of Brisbane. I couldn’t have asked for better results, 4 out of 4 with 2 by knockout” said head trainer Brendon Smith.
“We have wonderful talent in the gym and the team is growing stronger and stronger every day. All fighters are back in the gym training this week, with more big fights on the horizon.”
