Carlos Zarate, Jr., pounded Miguel Garcia Avila into a two round TKO defeat at the Amateur Fist of Gold Tournament in Mexico City.
With Dad sagely offering words of wisdom in his corner Carlos Jr., who’s a big framed lightweight, rocked Garcia with heavy left right combinations, to force a standing count in round one. Using his longer reach and powerful overhead rights, he forced two standing counts in round two, before the referee waved off the action.
Carlos Jr. who’s 18 years old, has won his first two amateur fights by stoppages. He fights again in this tournament on May 26th.
Dad, who was as pleased as punch said: “He’s coming on well and his style reminds me of myself as a youngster. He’s using his left jab effectively and I like the way he landed his right hand with considerable power.”
Carlitos said: “I’ve recently taken up boxing and I love it. I train every day in the Gala Prestige Boxing Gym. I’m learning fast. I’m so proud of my Dad, and I’m going to make him proud of me!”
Young Carlos would do well to listen to and learn from Pop. He had 33 amateur fights, winning 30 by KO and losing three. And he won the Mexican Golden Gloves title in 1969.
As a bantamweight his pro career was studded by an truly awesome long list of knockouts which led to the World Championship. Sixty-three of his sixty-six wins were by knockout, and he only lost four times.
