The momentum appears to be building for Carlos Quintana to defend his WBO welterweight title against Shane Mosley on May 31. Speaking with El Nuevo Dia, Quintana said a fight with Mosley is a very strong possibility for his first defense of the title he won last Saturday from Paul Williams.
"(Promoter) Lou DiBella told me yesterday that Mosley was a strong possibility. He called me and asked me what I thought of the fight," Quintana said. "And I told that it's a good opportunity for me and the chance to make good money. I would be great to fight Shane Mosley, who is a big name in boxing and still fights very well for his age."
Mosley is not the only fighter on Quintana's list of possible opponents. He's open to fighting his mandatory, Antonio Margarito, who challenges IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron on April 12. The WBO recently gave Margarito five-days to either accept his mandatory position for a fight with Quintana or to move forward with his shot at Cintron. It's expected that Margarito will move forward, which drops him from the mandatory position and then moves Mosley up the ladder for the mandated shot in the WBO rankings.
"We mentioned to DiBella that we liked the fight with Margarito because his style is better for me than a fight with Mosley. Mosley's quick hands would make the fight a little harder. But at this weight there are no easy fights," Quintana said.
