Chepo Reynoso, the manager of WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs), says his boxer is not planning to be in a co-feature position to Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) on September 14th. Golden Boy Promotions have been working on a deal to match Canelo and Mayweather on September 14. If a deal is not reached, both boxers want to return on the same date. Reynoso says Canelo will appear in a co-feature spot to Mayweather. If no deal with Mayweather is achieved, they will then consider a fight with Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30KOs).
"Canelo has reached the point in his career where he can not continue being a supporting bout. So we have to wait for it to resolve several things. There are several champions and fighters who represent a challenge. Miguel Cotto is a great champion inside the ring and a real challenge regardless of how many losses he has," Reynoso told Erika Montoya.
