Canelo Alvarez had part of his right hand bandaged as he spoke to the press following his knockout of Liam Smith, the result of an injury he suffered in the second round.
According to promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, it is a bruised knuckle. They’ll know more about the extent of the injury soon.
“It doesn’t appear to be broken,” Canelo said afterward. “We’re going to go see the doctor. Let’s see what the prognosis is.”
The diagnosis will determine when he’ll fight next. There had been a plan in place for Alvarez to fight toward the end of the year.
“Now with his hurt knuckle we’re going to have to go back to the drawing board and see what happens with December,” De La Hoya said. “Because our plans are to fight in December and then fight in May and then do the big fight [against Gennady Golovkin] in September.”
