According to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-1-1, 30KOs), the World Boxing Council's junior middleweight title will not be at stake in the upcoming fight with Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18KOs), scheduled for March 8th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
There was some talk of the title possibly playing a role - if Floyd Mayweather Jr. decided to vacate the belt. Mayweather won the title from Canelo in December, but he also holds the WBC title at welterweight. The sanctioning body asked him to drop one of the titles, but no decision has been made by the unbeaten boxer.
"No, it will not be involved in this fight. Of course it is my dream to become a world champion again, but the belt will not be involved in this fight," Canelo said.
