The World Boxing Council has voted to place former champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-1-1, 30KOs) in the number two position within the WBC's junior middleweight rankings. Canelo is sitting directly behind the number one ranked Sergey Rabchenko (24-0, 18KOs), who is the WBC's silver champion and also the EBU beltholder. Rabchenko defends his titles against Cedric Vitu (36-2, 15KOs) on November 16.
According to WBC Executive Secretary, Mauricio Sulaiman, the sanctioning body is waiting for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to make his final decision on which division he plans to stay at. Mayweather is the WBC's champion at welterweight and junior middleweight. The WBC has already contacted Mayweather to obtain an answer regarding which belt he plans to keep.
If Mayweather vacates his title, Sulaiman says the WBC would issue an order to have the two top contenders, Rabchenko and Canelo, fight for the vacant belt.
Canelo returns on March 8th against a yet to be named opponent.
