After watching some of Gennady Golovkin's recent fights, head trainer Eddy Reynoso has no doubt that Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) is capable of knocking him out inside the distance.
Golovkin (37-0, 34 KOs) has certainly proved that he can be hit in recent fights with Kell Brook, Daniel Jacobs and Willie Monroe.
This past Saturday night, Canelo moved up to a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds and punished Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. over twelve rounds of action at the T-Mobiel Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo will now challenge Golovkin for the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight titles on September 16th, as part of the Mexican Independence Day weekend.
"I really believe that Saul at his age is a fighter who has no limits, who won't be beaten, is disciplined, physically he always arrives in good condition, he is technically improving. He will get to where he wants to as long as he continues with that work ethic. He is in the best moment of his career and in September he will demonstrate who is the best pound for pound fighter in the world," said Reynoso to ESPN Deportes.
"Golovkin is also a fighter who only knows how to come forward, who has no defense, who does not know how to fight going backwards. This is a fight between a great counter-puncher like Saul and a scorer like Golovkin, so let's hope the styles come together. No doubt Saul has the talent to stop Gennady. He has good defense, he fights very well going backwards - and we are sure that with a great preparation and his talent, we can beat him."
If everything goes well with Golovkin, Reynoso would like to see his boxer fighter for a third time on a date in December.
"If we do well, we would like to do a third fight in December. We want Canelo to be active this year," Reynoso said. "This fight [with Chavez Jr.] left us satisfied, it gave us the guideline to know what we are capable of doing at 160 pounds after having fought with a super middleweight who endured a lot of punches."
"We coming in search of glory. We are one step away from arriving to make more history, to beat one of the most important fighters like GGG, and we are already on the right track."
