WBO junior middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1, 34KOs) is looking at facing both Billy Joe Saunders and Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin in 2017.

Canelo captured the WBC middleweight championship last November when he won a twelve round decision over Miguel Cotto at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

He retained the belt in May with a sixth round knockout of Amir Khan at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena. After the World Boxing Council pressed on him to make a mandatory defense against Golovkin, Canelo vacated the title and moved back down to junior middleweight.

Canelo officially returned to 154-pounds last month, and knocked out Liam Smith to capture the WBO championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

He was scheduled to return to the middleweight division this coming December, but a hand injury - suffered in the win over Smith - pushed back his next fight to 2017.

There is some talk of taking a fight in February, but there is still no confirmation of that.

One thing is clear, Canelo is going to fight in May as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend and then again in September as part of Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Canelo is currently in Puerto Rico to attend the WBO's annual convention in San Juan.

The plan of logic would be to fight Saunders for the WBO title in May, and then fight WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO champion Golovkin in a huge unification in September. The WBO would fully support a Canelo vs. Saunders fight at 160-pounds. Saunders will make a voluntary defense of his title next month, but he wants Canelo or Golovkin after that.

"I think it's a good plan," reacted Canelo to El Vocero. "What we have planned for next year is to debut at 160 pounds and win the championship. We can do it with the WBO, that's what we've thought about. My priority for now is to recover from my injury."
