WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (40-0-1, 29KOs) sat ringside in Ontario, California to watch Mexican female star Mariana Juarez retain her title. Canelo is already preparing to start his training camp for the upcoming defense against Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18KOs) in a Showtime televised main event on September 15th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
On the same night, at the Las Vegas' Thomas & Mack Center, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will defend his title against Sergio Martinez on HBO pay-per-view.
"I have no problem [with the events going head to head] because everyone has their followers, and the public is free to choose which fight [they want to support]," Canelo said.
Josesito is a big underdog in the contest. He moved up to welterweight in his last bout to break the jaw of Victor Ortiz, winning the fight with a ninth round TKO. Now he moves up again to meet Canelo at junior middleweight.
"I will prepare very hard because I know the importance of fighting in Las Vegas, on a special day for Mexico. I was surprised by Josesito's win over Victor Ortiz, it was a great performance. He [punished Ortiz] and appears to hit hard. He broke the jaw of Victor Ortiz. Our fight will be very good. I hope to have the support of the people. As always, I'm going to prepare myself to the limit. I'll go out as the winner, although I never like to say if it will be by [decision or] by knockout."
