According to Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez, former two-division world champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs) will meet with his company next week to discuss the pool of potential opponents for his scheduled return on September 17th.
The opponent will depend on whether or not Canelo decides to fight at junior middleweight or middleweight. Canelo's last five fights took place between the two divisions, at 155-pounds.
Canelo was in the ring on May 7th, headlining the first boxing event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He knocked out Amir Khan in six rounds to retain the WBC middleweight title.
There are still discussions taking place for a possible fight with WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
The World Boxing Council ordered Canelo to face Golovkin in a mandatory fight in the fall. The fight took a turn when Canleo vacated his WBC championship and then Golovkin was named by the sanctioning body as their new beltholder.
"We have nothing confirmed yet. We agreed to meet with Canelo, Chepo and Eddie [Reynoso] next week to start looking at those things," revealed Gomez to ESPN Deportes.
If the fight with Golovkin doesn't happen, two of names being kicked around include former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux and WBO 154-pound champion Liam Smith.
Lemieux was in action in the co-featured bout on Canelo-Khan, where he easily stopped Glen Tapia in four rounds. The fight was seen by some a showcase to build a potential fight in the fall with Canelo. That fight would have to take place at 160-pounds as Lemieux is unable to get down any lower. Smith retained his world title earlier this month with a second round knockout of Predrag Radosevic.
