Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) is waiting, like everyone else, to see if a deal can be reached for a fight with WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs). In an earlier article on BoxingScene.com, Cotto's legal adviser said his side was looking to finish up the negotiations by next week but makes no guarantee that a deal will be reached.
Canelo has been publically pushing for the fight, seen as one of the best matchups to be made in the sport - and continues the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry. The date of May 2, Cinco De Mayo weekend, is the pay-per-view target for promoters Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions.
"This will be a natural fight that people want to see. This is a fight that's very interesting and obviously we are ready to do it. We have been trying to make the fight and we're ready [to go forward]. Hopefully we can make it for people to enjoy it. Obviously it is being negotiated. We are in negotiations and hopefully it becomes a reality. And if not, we'll look for another option," Canelo said.
