Argentinean puncher Lucas 'La Maquina' Matthysse could end up facing Pablo Cesar Cano of Mexico on May 6th, according to a source who spoke with ESPN Deportes.
Matthysse (37-4, 34 KO) has been out of the ring since October 2015, when he suffered an unexpected knockout loss to Viktor Postol in their WBC junior welterweight title fight.
Matthysse is now focused on resuming his career - but now as a welterweight contender with a firm goal of securing a world title at 147-pounds.
The May card will be an HBO Pay-Per-View event, which features an all-Mexican main event with superstars Canelo Alvarez and Julio César Chávez Jr. colliding at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds.
Cano (30-5-1, 21 KOs) apparently has two options sent in front of him. One option is Matthysse. And the other option is undefeated welterweight contender Antonio Orozco (25-0, 16 KO), who is close to landing a world title shot at 140-pounds.
The question is whether or not Orozco would be willing to move up to the welterweight limit. Last month, he was scheduled to fight - but his bout got canceled on the day of the weigh-in after the boxer was so dehydrated from struggling to make weight that he fainting.
Other fighters who might see action on the Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. undercard could be Joseph "Jo Jo" Diaz, who also has Mexican blood, and Diego de la Hoya - as long as he wins in his February 25 fight against Yoandris Salinas in support of Miguel Cotto's HBO Pay-Per-View fight against James Kirkland in Texas. Both Diaz and De La Hoya have seen action on some of Canelo's past undercards.
