Several media outlets in the UK are reporting that Joe Calzaghe is looking for a unification bout against recently crowned IBF champion Jeff Lacy. Frank Warren is going to make a substantial cash offer to Gary Shaw, the promoter of Jeff Lacy in order to make the fight.
Should the fight come off, it would be the biggest fight at the super middleweight division in the last few years. The super middleweight division limit of 168 pounds has suffered due to a lack of talent, star appeal and none of the division's top fighters ever fight eachother. Calzaghe hopes that a win over Lacy, opens up doors for potential super fights against Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson. Jeff Lacy is said to be very receptive at the prospect of facing Calzaghe, recognized as the best fighter at 168 pounds.
"I hope the fight comes off but I think it may be 12 months away yet. I think and hope maybe he [Lacy] and I have been on a collision course since we both appeared on the same Showtime bill at Cardiff Castle back in August 2002. A unification fight with him is certainly something I would be interested in, I have been trying to unify the super middleweight division for years" said Calzaghe
Calzaghe also said that he is ready and willing to come to America in order to face Lacy, but only if the money if right.
