WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (43-0, 32KOs) in an interview on Frank Warren's official website, vowed to punish WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (39-0, 29KOs) when the two fighters meet on Nov. 3 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
"He's a tall upright fighter who doesn't like fighting backwards and doesn't like fighting on the inside, two things I do well," Calzaghe said. "I'm going to use my hand speed and my movement to win the fight. A lot of people are making out that he is the power puncher in this fight, but he couldn't knock out Librado Andrade and he couldn't knock out Anthony Mundine and he threw everything but the kitchen sink at those two. I'm looking forward to giving Mikkel Kessler a taste of his own medicine."
"With two good hands I can knock anyone out. He's got power but I have fought power punchers in the past. You are only as good as your opponent let's you be and he hasn't be in the ring with me."
Calzaghe also wants to use Kessler as a way to hit back at the critics who call him a "slapper," a reference to his punching style and power.
"I'm going to slap Mikkel Kessler pretty hard," said Calzaghe. "He is going into the fight fight thinking I can't punch, so I'm looking forward to wiping that smile off his face. In training my hands have been strong so I'm looking to unleash some power punches on November 3. Potentially he is the best fighter I have faced, he is 39-0 and he has unified the division, so all the statistics add up. But I am confident I am going to win. That's why I picked the fight. I pushed for this fight.
"I am going to smash the confidence out of him like I smashed the confidence out of Jeff Lacy."
